Welcome, Lykkers! Step into a world of fortified towers, noble emblems, and alpine beauty.

Standing proudly above the village of Burgusio in Alta Val Venosta, the Prince's Castle (also known as Furstenburg Castle or Castello del Principe) is a striking historic structure nestled just below the famous Monte Maria Abbey.

A symbol of power and architectural splendor, this castle invites visitors to explore its long and fascinating past, surrounded by the peaceful and scenic setting of South Tyrol.

History and Legacy

The Prince's Castle was originally constructed in the 13th century to serve as a residence for the princely rulers of the region. Its earliest known reference dates back to a 1292 document, attributed to Bishop Bertold II.

Over time, the structure grew in size and importance, with additional sections being added during the 16th and 17th centuries. The oldest part of the castle remains the mighty keep, its three-meter-thick walls a testament to the defensive needs of the era. About three decades ago, one of the towers collapsed. This event led to a transformation of the site, converting it into a professional school for agricultural and forestry sciences—still its current use today.

Architectural Highlights

The castle's architecture blends practicality with elegance. Inside and around its central courtyard, visitors will notice well-preserved frescoes depicting noble figures and heraldic emblems. These decorations offer insight into the status and cultural life of its former residents.

The structure dominates the landscape, both physically and visually. Its strong, weathered stone walls rise from the hillside, offering breathtaking views of the Val Venosta and the surrounding mountain scenery. Just above it, the Monte Maria Abbey—the highest Benedictine monastery in Europe—adds another layer of historical and cultural significance to the area.

Activities and Accessibility

Thanks to its position along the Val Venosta cycling trail, the Prince’s Castle is a convenient stop for cyclists and hikers alike. It's a rewarding destination for those interested in historic landmarks set against natural backdrops. The site is easily accessible by foot from Burgusio village—just follow the road past the San Michele and the castle soon comes into view.
